Cartoon pet tattoos in a four-panel collage

Neo-trad · Colour · Photo

The collage shows four cartoon tattoos of pets: a chihuahua with a red collar and heart tag in a horseshoe with a yellow flower, a bulldog-style puppy peeking from a blue teacup with crossed bones, a grey dog with a blue bow, and a sleeping cat in a teacup. The tattoos use bold black outlines, flat fills and bright colours such as red, yellow, blue and pink. A central photograph shows a real puppy and kitten beside pink flowers and grass, which is not a tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been falling on Harrowmere market since Tuesday, and the stallholders had stopped pretending it would clear. Old Mrs Pell kept her horseshoes under a tarpaulin with a hole in it, and every dog that trotted past her stall went away with a little brass heart on a red ribbon, because she said luck wanted something to hold on to.

A chihuahua called Tansy came by one wet morning with her ears up and her tail stiff, bragging that she could outrun any weather. She stopped to sniff a blue teacup on the next table, where a bulldog pup had climbed inside to keep dry. The pup said the cup was his and the crossed bones painted on it were his too, and they argued until the cup rolled off the table and split in two on the cobbles.

Mrs Pell did not scold either of them. She gathered the pieces, mended them with bread paste and rainwater, and set the cup down beside the horseshoe where the yellow flower grew. A grey dog with a blue bow sat down next to it and sighed, and a sleepy cat climbed into the cup to get warm. Nobody argued after that, because the cup had room for everyone willing to squeeze.

The rain stopped at dusk, the way it always did in Harrowmere, and the four of them walked home together under one umbrella. Tansy kept her ears up the whole way, but she let the pup carry the bones.
