Wrenna Dole had sold candyfloss on the Carrow Green fair for eleven summers, and in all that time the Pomeranian had never once been allowed behind the counter. Dumpling, as the dog was called, had a teal bow tied under her chin each morning by Wrenna's father, and she spent the first hour of every day sitting on the cool step of the ice cream trailer, watching the cones go out one by one.

On the last Saturday of August the generator coughed twice and died, and the freezer hum stopped. By six o'clock the strawberry scoops had gone soft in their tubs and the pink sprinkles had slid off the mint like confetti in a flood. A small boy in a yellow anorak stood at the hatch with a coin in each fist, asking whether anything could still be eaten.

Wrenna shook her head, but Dumpling trotted to the hatch, nudged the boy's wrist with her grey nose, and then, without fuss, began to worry at the bow beneath her chin until it came loose. She dropped it into his palm. "Trade," Wrenna heard herself say, though nobody had asked. He gave her one coin. She scraped the last of the mint into a cone and handed it down.

That night the trailer smelled of sugar and wet grass, and Wrenna found a teal ribbon tucked beneath the step, a single star pressed into its fold. She left it where it lay. In the morning the generator caught on the first pull, and Dumpling was waiting by the door with a bare neck, looking very pleased with herself.
