Collage of colourful sweet treat tattoos
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A collage of nine photographs showing bold, colourful tattoos of sweet treats, including donuts with bows, cake slices, a cat holding an ice cream cone, a candy cane with a bow, cupcakes with mouse ears and a cinnamon roll with a strawberry. The tattoos have thick black outlines with flat, saturated fills in pink, red, yellow, teal and green. Each photo is cropped tightly to the tattoo on the skin, with the images arranged in a grid.

The ferry had been late for three days, so by Thursday Marnie Holt had run out of cream, eggs and patience, and the only thing left in the tin was a fistful of pink sprinkles. Outside, gulls were squabbling over the bins behind the harbour shed. She had promised the Wren Island summer fair a cake that would make the mainland women sulk, and the sponge was still sinking in the cold oven.

Her nephew Tomasz came in dripping, holding a bent candy cane he'd found on the slipway. "It's got a bow on it," he said, as if that settled something. She tied a teal ribbon round it because it was quicker than arguing, then cut the sponge into wedges, layered it with raspberry jam and stripes of dyed icing, and crowned the top with the one strawberry she had been saving for herself.
Old Mrs Gale from the cottages came by at four and studied the ice cream cone Marnie had painted on the shutter the spring before. She asked whether the cat was still living under the pier. Marnie said it was. It had a bow now, and a cherry on its head, and nobody had ever managed to shoo it off the counter. Mrs Gale bought the last cupcake, the one with the mouse ears, and ate it on the steps with her eyes closed.
At six the fair judges came up the hill with their clipboards. They tasted everything and said very little. Then the cat from the pier strolled in, hopped onto the judges' table, and nibbled a sprinkle off the cake as if it had been invited. Marnie decided that counted as a verdict. When the rosette was pinned to her apron, she swept the stray pink sprinkles off the step and saved a few for the morning.
