Bambi, Thumper and Flower in a rose frame
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows the cartoon deer Bambi standing beside the rabbit Thumper and the skunk Flower, set within an oval frame against a cloudy sky. Two small birds perch on a red drape at the top, and pink and red roses sit above and below the frame. The linework is bold and dark, with smooth, saturated colour fills and soft shading on the fur and sky.

You had been counting the hours until the bus, so the van that rolled onto the forecourt at Dry Creek at ten past noon seemed to have no business being there. Its back doors were tied shut with a pink silk scarf, and through the dusty windscreen you could see a little row of painted birds, fixed to the dashboard like bunting. Out stepped a rabbit in a waistcoat, then a skunk with a careful, unhurried walk, and last, unfolding from the cab on long, wobbling legs, a fawn who looked as if he had never been past the edge of a wood before.

"Petrol first," the rabbit said, "then directions." The fawn asked whether the desert ever had snow, and the skunk told him gently that it did not, but that the sunsets made up for it. You filled the tank while they argued over whether the road west or the road north reached the lake. The rabbit won, because the rabbit always won, and he paid with a fistful of coins he counted twice across the counter.
As the van pulled away, the fawn leaned from the passenger window and looked back at you with enormous, startled eyes, as though you were the strangest thing he had seen all trip. Then the scarf slipped its knot and streamed out behind them like a flag, pink against a sky gone the colour of peaches. You stood in the doorway and watched it until the dust swallowed it whole.
That evening, sweeping the forecourt, you found a single rose petal stuck to the side of pump three. You pressed it between the pages of the day's ledger, where it stayed for years, long after the road had forgotten their names and you had nearly forgotten them too.
