The ribbon wouldn't lie flat, so Maureen sat on the edge of the stage and let Ruth kneel at her feet and do it up. Outside, the November rain had turned the car park into a sheet of black glass, and the radiators knocked the old waltz up through the floorboards, the same tune they had knocked for thirty-one years.

The shoes had been the last thing in the cupboard under the stairs. Ruth's mother had kept them in a biscuit tin, wrapped in a tea towel, with a note pinned to the tissue: For the hall, if it ever closes. Ruth had read it twice in the car and then not again, because the hall was closing on Friday and the buyers wanted the mirrors gone by Thursday.

Above the stage the word itself still hung in gold paint, the letters looping and a little flaky at the joins. Maureen, who had taught the Tuesday juniors there since before Ruth could walk, tipped her head back to look at it. 'Your mum did that herself,' she said. 'Stood on a chair with the brush in her teeth.'

Ruth climbed the chair. The paint came away under her thumbnail in a soft curl, and she carried the flake of it down the hall in her palm like something that might still be warm. Maureen had already pulled the ribbon tight. She rose, pointed one foot at the mirror, and said nothing at all. The D went last, Ruth decided, because it was the one her mother had always made a little too big.
