Coffee cup tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo of a coffee cup on a saucer, with three wisps of steam rising above it, sits on the side of an ankle. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is shown in simple black ink. The bare skin is framed against red ballet flats and a gravel-like ground in a square photo with a white border.

The urn in the back of the wagon has been coughing since Tuesday, and you are the only one who knows how to coax it, tapping the lid twice with a teaspoon the way Mabel showed you before her knees gave out. Outside, the big top sags over sawdust nobody has swept since the elephant went to a farm in Cumbria. Gerald is counting the takings for the third time, moving coins from one saucer to another as if they might breed.

The bills come in envelopes with little windows. Gerald reads them aloud as though they were reviews, and you pour him a cup he doesn't drink. The trapeze wire was condemned in March, the clowns have taken jobs at a garden centre, and the strongman sleeps in the horsebox with a dog called Pudding. Every evening the steam from your cups curls up past the tent poles and vanishes into the rafters, three thin ribbons that look, you think, like the wisps you chalk on the menu board.
On the last night only nine people come: a boy in a school blazer, two pensioners sharing a blanket, a woman at the back with a pushchair she never unfolds. At the interval you carry a tray down the sawdust aisle, and nobody asks for one. So you set a cup on each empty seat in the front row, saucers balanced, steam rising into the work lights.
Gerald finds you there after the finale and says the takings won't cover the diesel. You tell him to drink his coffee while it's hot. He sits down in the middle of the ring with the cup held in both hands, and for once he doesn't count anything.
