Infinity symbol with script letters on foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink infinity symbol is tattooed on the top of a foot, with two cursive letters sitting in its left loop and along the crossing line. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the lettering flows into the curves of the infinity sign. The beige shoe and grey carpet in the background are plain, and the photo is taken at an angle showing the foot and shoe.

The lock keeper at Sallow Cut would not open the gate until the boy had walked the towpath round the loop of water three times, so Mag Tolliver sat on the cabin step with her boots wet and counted the bends aloud for him.

The canal there did something no canal should. It ran out from the mill wall, curled through the reed beds, crossed its own water under the old brick bridge, and came back to the same gate it had left. The bargemen said a man dug it who could not decide where he wanted to be, and that the only way out was to write two names in chalk on a flat stone, carry them to the crossing, and drop the stone where the channels met. Whoever's names sank with the stone would be let through.
The boy had the chalk in his pocket and a J he had copied from his mother's letters, curled tight like a fishhook. He wanted an E beside it, for his sister, who had gone down the cut in February and not come back up. Mag watched him kneel on the bridge and draw the E so its bottom stroke ran along the J's spine, the way their mother used to write them both on the flour tins.
The stone went under without a splash. The water closed over it, the reeds bent back, and the gate at Sallow Cut swung open on its own. Mag took the tiller. The boy stood on the bow with his hands empty, and when she looked down the cut the crossing was already behind them, the loop of water running straight for once toward the sea.
