Love script with infinity loop on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black script word reading love is looped into an infinity shape on the ankle of a raised leg. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The sepia-toned photograph shows beige platform heels and a black sock against a pale background.

The snow shut the Hollin Gate pass on the Tuesday, and by Thursday every guest at the inn had read every book on the parlour shelf twice. Only Mrs Ruth Calder kept busy. She sat by the window with a bottle of iron-gall ink and a steel nib, practising one word over and over on the back of a seed catalogue. I brought her fresh candles and watched her pen.

'It has to run on,' she told me, without looking up. 'If the line stops, the word stops with it.' She showed me the sheet: love, written so that the final e swung back under the l and curled into a loop, then came round again like a rope run through a pulley. 'My husband says it looks like a fish hook,' she said. 'He can't read it upside down.' Her letter was for Tom, who had walked out to the lambing sheds on Monday and had not come back for supper.
On Friday the sky cleared and the ploughmen dug us out. Ruth sealed the letter, pressed her thumb into the wax, and gave it to the boy who would ride down to the post at Settle. He asked whether it would reach Tom before the thaw. She said the ink had never once lied to her, and that the loop would carry it there.
Three weeks later a carter brought back a reply, folded small. Tom had written only one word, on the same catalogue, in a hand that wandered off the line and found its way back again. I still keep that catalogue above the till, the reply pinned to one corner, the ink gone brown at the edges of every loop.
