Dandelion seed tattoos behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Mixed · Photo
Four dandelion seed heads with thin black stems drift down the side of the neck, from just behind the ear towards the collarbone. The seed heads are filled with soft red and pink shading, while the stems and fine bristles are drawn in delicate black linework. The hair is pinned up on the left and the background is a soft, blurred green.

Their gran had a rule. You blew once, you made your wish, and you never looked to see where the seeds went. Tom called it rubbish, a rule for people scared of the answer. He pulled a clock free and held it to the low sun, and a flush of red showed through the white at its centre like a coal under ash.
The wind came down off the fell at four, sudden as a slammed door, and took the whole verge at once. Nell did not blow. She kept her hands in her pockets and watched four seeds lift in a loose line and drift south over the beck, each one trailing a thread of black behind it like a stitch pulled through cloth. Tom ran after them, shouting that they were going the wrong way.
Years later, when the lane had been tarmacked and Nell had a daughter of her own, a single clock broke loose from a hedge and spun across the mill yard until it caught on the sill of an open window. Nell stood at the gate with the girl's hand in hers and, for once, let herself look to see where it went.
