Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A dandelion seed head sits on the inner wrist, with fine black stems and a dense, soft-shaded cluster of seeds at the top. Several individual seeds drift away from the head toward the upper left, giving a sense of movement. The image is in black ink only, against pale skin with a dark fabric edge at the lower right.

Dear Mother, the abbot has finally let me into the herb garden beyond the infirmary wall, though he says I may only weed the paths and not touch the beds. The brothers here keep time by the bell, but the boy Edwin, who came to us at Lent with a cough and a stammer, keeps it by the dandelions. Every morning before Lauds he goes out to the verge by the sluice, finds the clocks gone grey, and blows them one breath at a time, saying the hour aloud for each seed that leaves.

I told him it was idle. He said Brother Cuthbert had taught him that the seeds only fly where the wind is willing. Last Thursday the wind came round from the west over the moor and took the whole head of one clock in a single breath. Edwin stood with the bare stalk in his fist, his mouth open, and counted nothing at all. He did not stammer once that day, not at Sext nor at the reading.

The abbot saw the stalk on the cloister step and asked whose it was. I said nobody's, which was a lie, and he looked at me the way he looks at the psalter when a line is out of order. He let it pass.

This morning Edwin came to the gate with his fist closed. He had kept one seed, a single grey feather on a thread of stem, and asked me to hold it while he fetched his coat. The wind was in the west again. I opened my hand for him and watched it lift over the wall toward the road, and I counted it out loud, the way he would have wished.
