Sunflower line drawing with stem and leaves
Fine line · Mixed · Flash
A single sunflower head is drawn in fine black outline, with layered petals radiating around a blank central disc. A long stem runs down to the bottom edge, with two leaves drawn in thin red and black lines. The composition is centred on a white background with no shading, and the image reads as a stencil or design sketch rather than a photograph of skin.

Brother Anselm has taken the sunflower seeds again, and I have decided not to mention it to Prior Edwin until the harvest is in. We planted the row along the south wall in April, against the advice of everyone who has ever tried to grow anything in this wet corner of the county, and now the heads stand taller than the cloister door. Each one turns to the sun over the course of a day, which the brothers say is a sin of vanity, though I have watched Anselm himself stand in the yard at noon with his face tilted up like the most devout of them.

This morning I went out with my pencil and tried to draw the largest head, the one by the well. The petals fell over themselves on the paper. Every time I began a new ring the outer one spread wider than I meant, so the drawing became a crowd of leaves pushing out from a blank centre I could not seem to fill. I left the middle empty in the end, a clean circle, because I could not think what belonged there. Sister Agnes came by with the bread and looked over my shoulder and said that was the only honest part of it.
We will cut the heads when they bow, and dry them on the racks in the granary, and the seed will go to the poor at Easter. I have kept one stem back for myself. I have drawn its leaves in red ink, since the ink was what I had, and tucked the page inside the psalter where the ribbon marks the Song of Songs. Tomorrow I will try the centre again.
