Dark tattoo sleeve in a crochet maxi dress
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A person stands in a mirror selfie wearing a cream crochet maxi dress with an open lace pattern, holding a phone in one hand. The tattooed arm carries a large sleeve of dark, shaded ink across the upper arm and forearm, with smaller tattoos visible near the wrist and on the other arm. The room has a dark sofa, a wooden floor and framed prints on a pale wall, and the image is mostly black and grey apart from the dress.

The wolf had watched Ada Penhallow work her hook through three winters before she thought to ask it why. She sat by the cottage window above the mill race, and each row she finished, the grey shape by the door shifted a little closer to the hearth, its eyes catching the lamp like wet slate.

"You're counting my stitches," she said one night, not looking up.
The wolf did not answer, which was its way. But it lay down with its chin on its paws, and Ada took that for a bargain. In the morning she found a tuft of coarse grey hair caught in the bramble by the gate, and by the new moon she had spun it fine enough to thread through her cream lace. She worked the pattern the way the wolf's shoulders ran, every shadowed ridge darker than the last, until the miller's wife came up the lane asking for a dress to wear to the wake of her husband's brother.
"Wear it in the square," Ada told her. "Keep your arms bare where the light falls."
The miller's wife laughed and did as she was told. By the next market day the whole village had seen the dress, and the wolf, which had never once crossed the bridge, stood at the edge of the square with its ears up, watching the grey lace move like smoke over her hip. Ada kept her hook in her lap and her eyes on the cottage door, where the hearth had gone cold for the first time in three winters.
