Dashed line tattoo on a middle finger
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is shown with the middle finger raised, and a row of short, dark, slightly irregular dashes runs diagonally along the side of the finger. The marks are solid black ink with no shading, and the background is an indoor room with a blurred white appliance and a dark floor. The framing is close and taken at an angle, with the tattoo occupying the centre of the image.

Tomasz knelt on the wet cobbles of Saltgate Market with the tailor's chalk in his fist, drawing a line along the edge of a bolt of grey wool while the rain ran off the awnings in ropes. Every stroke was short, then a gap, then another short stroke, because his mother had told him that a solid line was a liar. A solid line promised the cloth would part exactly where you said, she told him, but a broken line admitted that a cut could still be changed, and a cloth was always wiser than a hand.

A man in a long coat stopped at the stall before noon, his collar turned up against the weather. He wanted a coat cut from one length with no seam at the back, and he wanted it by dusk. Tomasz did not argue. He followed the dashes he had made and set the shears to them, one small bite after another, the blades ticking like a clock that had lost its hurry. The man watched without speaking, and when the shears had finished, the wool lay open in a single panel that looked like a door left ajar.
The rain stopped at dusk and washed the chalk clean off the stall. The man paid in silver, shrugged the coat over his shoulders and walked away into the lamplight. Tomasz picked up the offcuts from the cobbles, and found that each little gap in the wool had kept its place, the cloth folding along the broken line as neatly as if the chalk had never been there at all.
