Deadpool comic panel on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo recreates a Deadpool comic panel showing the character in his red and black suit, holding a pistol and crossing his arms, with a katana over one shoulder. Bold black outlines, flat saturated reds and blues, and a yellow speech bubble with caption boxes give it a comic book look. The photo shows the same calf tattoo twice, side by side, filling the frame.

The Majestic ballroom on Carrow Road had a sprung floor, a bandleader called Teddy Vance who owed me forty quid, and a Saturday crowd that did not notice a man in red leather crashing through the fire door with a katana over his shoulder. Nobody screamed. A woman in a lilac frock just tipped her hat and kept foxtrotting, which told me all I needed to know about this town.

I had come for Teddy, who had sold my address to a fellow with a violin case full of rifles, and who was now up on the stage with a clarinet, pretending he had never heard of me. I pointed the pistol at him. He pointed the clarinet at me. The drummer kept time, bless him, and the trombones didn't miss a beat.

"Forty quid, Teddy," I said, through the microphone he had carelessly left switched on for the crooner. "And a sincere apology to the coat check girl."

"I'd have gone with the coat check girl," said Teddy, "if she'd not been the one who cracked my ribs." He handed me a biscuit tin from under the piano. The notes inside were damp and smelled of Brylcreem. I counted them anyway, because a man in my line of work has to know what he's been paid in, even if he's been paid by a clarinettist.

I tucked the katana back into place, climbed out through the fire door the way I came, and left the band to their slow number. Somewhere behind me the lilac lady was still turning. In the corner of the panel, where the caption box always sits, someone had written MEANWHILE, THE FOXTROT CONTINUED.
