Batman and Catwoman calf tattoos
Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo
Two bold heads sit on the back of a pair of calves: Batman in profile on the left leg and Catwoman in profile on the right, each in a black mask with pointed ears. Heavy black outlines and grey shading give the faces and cowls dimension, with purple and yellow washes behind them, and each figure has a curled banner and a yellow rose beneath. The picture is framed from behind, with a faint outline shape between the calves and yellow sneakers at the bottom.

The gas lamp on the Mary Ellen has gone out again, so you steer by torchlight while the cut narrows between black hedges. Marnie sits on the roof with the tin masks in her lap, the ears bent sharp with pliers, a thermos gone cold beside her. She has painted a yellow rose on the back of each one. Tonight, she says, you're the cat.

Nobody else is out on the water. Upstream a heron lifts off the weir and the lock beams groan. You tie up at Grindle Bridge, where the towpath turns to rutted clay, and climb the bank with the masks in a carrier bag. Marnie has a theory that Dunmore, who keeps the lock after dark, has been leaving the gates open so the boats ground on the sill and he can pick the cargo clean. She means to catch him at it.
Halfway along the wall you stop. A flat-bottomed skiff sits in the reeds with no one aboard and its painter cut clean. Marnie tilts her head at the banner she lettered in white gouache at Christmas, the words curling under the rose: we come alive. Then she laughs, low and steady, and you realise she isn't frightened at all.
Dunmore's cabin light is on. You pull the masks down, tin ears clanking against the doorframe, and step into the lamplight together. He looks up from his ledger, sees two shapes in the doorway, and says the one thing you didn't plan for. 'Took your time,' he says, and pushes a second cup of tea across the table.
