Tuesday, 14th March. The stranger came out of the beech wood at dusk with a pistol in one hand and a sodden cigarette in the other, and asked whether I was the man who painted the signs for the Crown. I said I was the man who painted the signs for anyone who couldn't spell. He laughed at that, which I took as a good sign, and then he asked me to draw him lying down.

He wanted to be propped on one elbow, legs stretched out like the girls on the baker's calendar, the gun raised as if he'd just thought of something clever. He dictated the bubble while I mixed the yellow. "Draw me like one of your French girls." I told him the calendar girls were painted by a man in Rouen who had never once been asked to explain himself. He said that was exactly the problem.

I gave it three evenings with the lamp pulled close and the wood creaking outside. Heavy black outlines, because that is all a stranger's patience will stand, and enough red to frighten the rooks. Each night he came back to check the lettering, and each night he wouldn't pay until every letter was square. Owls kept time beyond the window while I worked.

On the third morning the board was finished and he was gone, the coins left on the bench and a scrap of paper pushed under the jar: "Tell the rooks it's a likeness." I hung the sign above the bakery door. By noon half the village had stopped to read it, and the baker's wife, who is never shy, asked me to paint her a bubble of her own.
