Death Star with Fly Casual banners
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A large Death Star sphere in dark grey and black sits at the centre, with a lighter grey panel detail and a raised dish on the upper right. Two orange ribbon banners wrap around it, reading FLY and CASUAL in black capitals, outlined in bold black lines. A soft red wash sits behind the design, and purple shading adds depth to the ribbon folds.

The ferry is late again, and you are the only one on the slip who isn't swearing about it. Up the hill, past the chapel, the old signals station still holds a grey ball of fibreglass on its concrete plinth, cracked panels and a dish with a crow's nest of wire. Nobody has used it since 1979. The island calls it the Bauble, and from the harbour wall it looks like something that might roll down the brae and flatten the post office.

Your cousin Iona bets you a pint that you can't get up there and back before the 16:10 sails. You take the bet because you have a tin of enamel paint in your bag and a stupid idea that the Bauble needs a motto. On the track you pass sheep, a dead gull and a quad bike sunk to its handlebars in the bog. At the top you tape a stencil to the sphere and, when the wind drops, spray the first word in black capitals across a gold strip, a ribbon drawn fat and curling the way the old banners on the pier did before the storm took them.
Then you hear Iona shouting from the path that the ferry has come early. It hasn't. You realise she has been on the phone to the mainland, and you grin, slap the last word on the lower ribbon and sprint. You don't make the boat. You watch it slide out past the breakwater while the paint dries in the wind, and you decide the Bauble has finally got the motto it deserved.
