Flying saucer and green alien on an upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a grey and black flying saucer with a red highlight along its underside, beaming down two dotted lines towards a small green alien head with a red eye. The linework is bold and outlined, with simple grey shading on the saucer's domes and rim. Colour is limited to green, red and grey against a plain red background, and the design fills the frame of the arm.

Dear Tom,

Don't laugh when you read this, though I know you will. Last Tuesday, with frost still on the gate at six, I went out to break the ice on the trough and there was a saucer sat over the top field like a pudding basin somebody had left on the kitchen range. Grey, with a red rim underneath that caught the light the way the shed roof does when the sun finally comes round. Two lines of little dots came down from it, and at the bottom of the beams, bobbing about in the turnips, was a green head no bigger than a cabbage, with one red eye looking straight at me.

Mum says it was the lads from the village pinching the Christmas trees and dressing up. I told her it was no such thing, because the beam came through the hedge and lifted the dog's ball clean off the wall, and the ball has not come back. The thing in the turnips never moved the whole time I stood there. It just watched me with that one red eye, as if it was waiting on an answer I had not got yet.

Then the saucer tilted, the beams went slack, and the head rolled into the ditch by the bottom gate. Dad went down with the torch this morning and found nothing but frost-burnt nettles and a single hubcap wedged in the hedge, which he has put on the windowsill as if it might explain things. I have not told him about the eye.

I am sending the photo I took on my phone, though it is mostly sky. Come home for the lambing if you can. Somebody has to stand in the top field with me, and I would rather it was you than the sheepdog.

Your loving brother, Ned
