Stormtrooper helmet with galaxy visor on a calf
Dotwork · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A Stormtrooper helmet sits at the centre of the design, shaded in grey with a stippled, dotted texture. The visor and several angular shards around the helmet are filled with bright purple, blue and pink space imagery with small star points. The tattoo is photographed straight on against a plain skin tone and a blurred indoor background.

Mind the lamp, it's the only one that doesn't gutter when the swell comes up, and don't touch the helmet on the chart table, it's the Captain's and he'll have your hand. Right. Where was I? The Marigold was eleven weeks out of Valparaiso with a hold full of nitrate and a navigator who had lost the sun twice in one week, which happens to men who won't admit their spectacles are cracked.

That helmet came aboard at Callao, off a salvage lighter that had hauled it out of the sea wrapped in fishing net. Grey as a gull's back, dented at the brow, and the visor split into four glassy shards that caught the lamp and threw it back in colours no paint in our locker could match. Violet, blue, a pink like burnt sugar. Small white pricks scattered through them, the way the sky looks when you've stared at it too long. The cook swore it was bad luck. The second mate swore it was a mirror. Young Tomas put it on in the dog watch and said he could see the Southern Cross through the left eye, and the whole crew went quiet, because he had never once been right about anything.
We lost the coast on the thirty-first night. Cloud closed over like a lid. The navigator sat in the chart house with the helmet on his knee, turning it slowly, and said nothing for an hour. Then he set it on the binnacle with the broken visor to the sky and told the helmsman to steer by whatever points of light showed through the glass. Ridiculous, I know. Yet by dawn we were a full ten miles north of where the charts said we ought to be, and Cape Horn sat exactly where he'd promised.
Pass me that helmet, would you? It's gone cold, and I want to see if the stars still come through.
