Triangle, circle and script on the upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small black fine line tattoo sits centrally on the upper back, showing an equilateral triangle with a circle inside it and a vertical line running from the apex to the base. Thin script lettering is written along the vertical line within the circle, and the text is only partly legible. The image is a close, straight-on photograph in black and white, with the tattoo centred against pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The river ran low that summer, and the three brothers of Carrow walked down to it with nothing but their father's debts and the clothes they stood in. At the ford they found a grey man sitting on a flat stone, cleaning his nails with a bone knife, and he did not get up.

Death, he said, owed them nothing, but he had a habit of offering a thing to anyone who crossed his water. The eldest asked for a stick that never missed. The grey man cut a length of ash from the bank and handed it over, a line of small writing running down its length that no one could read. The eldest went off into the hills to hunt and was never seen again. The second brother asked for a stone that would bring back the dead. It was round and cold, and he carried it to his wife's grave and sat there until the stone was warm in his palm and nothing else happened.

The youngest asked for something to hide from the grey man. He was given a cloak so thin it was little more than breath, and Death said, 'Wear this, and I shall not find you until you are ready to be found.' The youngest kept it folded in his pocket for fifty years. He married a widow from the mill, mended nets, and grew old beside a kettle and a lame dog.

When he was very old, he walked down to the ford and laid the cloak on the flat stone. The grey man was there, as he always was, and he looked up without surprise. 'You took your time,' said Death. 'I was in no hurry,' said the youngest, and he sat down beside him, and together they watched the river go on without them.
