Deathly Hallows symbol and script word on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a triangle with a circle and vertical line inside it, with the word always written in cursive script beneath. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits centred on the inner wrist against a blurred outdoor background of grass and foliage, with a white sleeve at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Uncle Teo chalked the mark on the side of the dodgem van the morning we left Hull: a triangle, a ring inside it, and a single stroke running through the ring from top to bottom. He said it was the old showmen's sign for a fair that would come back. I thought it looked like a tent with a sun caught in it, and said so, and he laughed so hard he had to sit down on the step.

We drove south with the generator rattling behind the lorry. At every stop he drew the mark again, on the gate of the field, on the boards of the hook-a-duck stall, always in the same chalk with the line running straight through the middle. When I asked what the line was for, he said it was the road, the part you can't see from the field but can always feel under the wheels.

The winter we wintered at Wakefield, he got poorly. I found him on the van step one grey morning with the chalk in his fist and the lines already gone soft in the drizzle. Beneath the mark, in small careful letters, he had written a word I had never seen him write, and it was still damp enough to smudge under my thumb.

I bought a tin of white gloss from the hardware shop on Westgate and painted over the whole thing, bigger, so the weather couldn't take it. Then I fetched the chalk and wrote the word underneath the way he would have, leaning the letters forward as if they were in a hurry to get somewhere.
