Solid black moose silhouette on skin
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black moose silhouette stands side on, with its head raised and its antlers spread wide. The fill is even and dense, with no shading or interior detail, and the edges are crisp. The surrounding skin shows pink irritation, which suggests the tattoo is fresh, and a dark fabric edge appears in the top right corner.

Tuesday, the wind backing north-west. The ferry from Oban did not come, so Mrs Galloway walked up from the slipway with a tea towel over a crate of eggs and asked whether I had seen the big stag on the road above the boatyard. I said I had seen nothing but gulls. She said it was no stag, it was a moose, and that her brother had brought one back from Canada in 1959 as a joke and it had lived eleven years in a field behind the Co-op. I did not believe her. I wrote it down anyway, because the log is for what happens, and nothing has happened here since the Eskdale wreck except rain.

Thursday. Fog on the Sound until noon. At half past eleven the shape came out of it on the shingle, black as a cutout, head high, the palms of its antlers spread like a man's hands on a counter. It stood side on to the light and did not look at me. I counted its legs twice. Four, and each one ending clean, as if someone had taken scissors to the fog and left only the outline. I went down with the brass telescope and by the time I had the lens focused it had turned its back on the water and was gone into the bracken.
Saturday. Mrs Galloway came back with a bruise of a face and said her brother's moose had eaten her wedding veil in 1961 and she had never forgiven it. I asked what became of it. She said it went home to the mountains when the field was sold, and the Co-op men tried to stop it on the road and it simply walked through their lorry lights. I have put a new wick in the lamp. Wind still north-west. The ferry is due Monday, if the fog allows.
