Neo-traditional style tattoo of a winged figure, an orange-irised eye and flames across the inner forearm, shown in three side-by-side views.

Winged eye and flames on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large winged figure sits above a detailed eye with an orange and red iris, with flames rising through the centre and a yellow-orange glyph below. The wings and background are rendered in grey shading with fine hatching, while the eye, flames and glyph carry the colour. The collage shows the design from three angles on a forearm against a plain background.

Dear Marguerite, you will think me mad to write from the back of a caravan with the rain coming sideways, but Mr Vance has gone off to fetch the generator and I have only this tin of Bovril and your old fountain pen. The fair is packed up in the field behind Oakhampton church. The big wheel stands folded like a sleeping heron and the Hall of Mirrors has been wrapped in tarpaulin like a coffin. You asked what I saw in the glass last Saturday. I still cannot say, except that it had wings and it blinked.

The man who painted our sign was called Jory Penhale, a Cornish fellow with flour-white hands and a cough. He told me that a fairground eye is only a painted thing until someone's own gaze gives it heat. Then he stopped talking, because the wind had got into the tent and the lamps were swinging, and he looked at the old ringmaster's hand where the flames seemed to climb the knuckles. He said that was the eye settling on us.

I am not one for omens. But this morning the eye on the midway banner had changed colour, the iris gone from brown to the orange of a coal, and the yellow glyph beneath it had been scratched out with a nail. Nobody here will say who did it. Penhale packed his brushes and left without his wages. Mr Vance says he has gone to the coast. I think he has only gone to stand somewhere the wings cannot find him.

Come down to Penzance when the season ends, and bring the good scissors. I will show you the eye. It is smaller than you would think, and it is looking at the door.
