Diabetic type 1 medical alert tattoo on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of a small tattoo on the inner wrist of a hand resting on a car seat. A red star of life medical alert symbol sits to the left of two lines of black serif capitals reading DIABETIC TYPE 1. The lettering is crisp and evenly spaced, and the plain background keeps the focus on the wrist.

Dear Alis, The kit bag you signed for on Tuesday still has the red star stitched on its flap, and I'd be grateful if you stopped leaving it on the bonnet of the Land Rover. The snow came over the Brae a fortnight early this year, and when the call came through from the bothy, the only thing I could think of was the cardboard box on the top shelf of the store, the one with the star printed on the lid and the card tucked inside. Your predecessor filled them all in biro, and half the names have run in the damp.

We found the lad in the lee of the cattle grid at half past four, his torch still on, a sheepdog sitting in the snow beside him as if it had been paid to wait. Dougie carried the box up from the car before anyone else had their boots laid out. Nobody had to ask what was in it. The card said what his body would need before the words in his coat pocket could do any good, and it was written by his mother in a hand so neat it could have been printed. We have never once needed to read a card aloud on the hill, and I'd like it to stay that way.
So this is my request, and the reason I'm writing rather than telling you across the kitchen table. Go through every box before the thaw. Replace the sachets that have gone soft, rewrite any card the rain has taken, and check the star on each lid still shows red and not brown. If a name is smudged, ring the family. They will always pick up, even at eleven at night.
The tea is in the flask by the door. Leave the Land Rover in the shed and bring the stretcher pole in with you. Yours, Morag
