Three pixel hearts on a wrist
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Three small heart shapes sit in a row on the inner wrist, drawn with blocky, stepped edges in black outline. The first heart is unfilled, the second has its right half filled in red, and the third is solid red. The hand is raised against dark trousers, with a red sweater cuff at the bottom of the frame.

The cabinet came into the lock-up in March, wrapped in a bedsheet that smelled of someone else's airing cupboard. Mrs Oduya's son had carried it up the ramp on one shoulder, grunting, and set it down between a stack of tyres and my bench. Behind the scratched glass a knight called Pell stood at the edge of a pixel moat, and above his head ran the health bar: three hearts drawn in blocky black outline, none of them filled.

I spent two weeks on the board. Most of the job was cleaning decades of dust off the connectors and replacing a capacitor that had bulged like a tired plum. Mrs Oduya came by every Thursday with a flask and asked nothing about the machine, which I found easier than questions. Then one afternoon the screen flickered, Pell lifted his sword, and the second heart filled on the right side only, a red half-moon. Her hand went to her mouth. She told me her husband had played it every night after his shifts at the bus depot, and that he always stopped with one heart left, because he said the last one was for the boss.
I didn't have the heart to ask whether she wanted the board left as it was. Instead I reflowed the solder on the old chip, cursed the lighting, and let the game run its boot sequence. When the title screen faded in, all three hearts glowed. She pressed start, and Pell walked straight into the moat with the same stubborn little stride he'd had since before I was born, and she laughed until she had to sit down on an upturned crate.
