Diver in a striped swimsuit on the side of the body

Fine line · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A small figure of a woman diving head first, with arms stretched forward and body extended horizontally. The linework is thin and dark, with the red and white striped swimsuit as the main area of colour and the skin tones left mostly unfilled. The design sits on bare skin below a grey top, with plenty of empty space around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The whistle at Bellhouse pit went at six, and by the time the men had walked up the hill with their tins, Edith Mott was already on the lip of the flooded quarry in her red and white costume. She had sent to Hull for it with two shillings of her own. Her mother said it was not decent. Her father said nothing, which in that house was the same as agreeing.

The quarry had taken three boys the summer before, and the village said the water wanted a payment every year. Nobody could say who had first told them that. Edith did not believe it, and she said so to the wall at the top of the path, where the older women left crusts for whatever lived below. She stood with her arms stretched out straight, the way her cousin had shown her on the sands at Filey, and she went in head first without looking down.

Under the surface the water was cold enough to stop a heart, and quieter than the pit had ever been. She could see the old tramway rails running down into the green, and a lamp someone had dropped in 1911 still hanging on its hook, lit by nothing at all. She did not stay. She kicked up, broke the top, and found the men standing at the edge with their caps off, as if she had come up with the coal.

Her mother was waiting on the bank with a towel over one arm. She did not say it was not decent. She broke the heel of the loaf into pieces and threw the first of them out over the black water, for whatever had let her go.
