Divergent script and circle symbols on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms are shown against green grass. One arm bears the word divergent in flowing black script, with a flock of birds rising from the final letters. The other arm carries five circular black and grey symbols, including a flame, clasped hands, what appears to be scales, an eye within a ring, and a tree with roots, and the ink appears to be temporary transfers.

The ferry from Harrow Quay stopped running in February, so the five households of Scarrow had to settle their quarrels by rowing across the sound themselves. Old Maud Tennant kept the tally on a slate by the lighthouse. Each family carried a sign on their boat: a flame for the men who mended the hulls, a pair of clasped hands for the widows who shared the flour, scales for the two brothers who argued the law, an eye in a ring for the schoolmaster, and a rooted tree for the orchard people who never left the hill.

The year the herring failed, a girl called Ines Carrow refused her sign. She would not take the flame, which burned too fast, nor the hands, which held too tight. She sat on the breakwater with a pot of ink and a feather and wrote the one word her grandmother had said of the sea: divergent. The schoolmaster laughed until he saw the ink had dried in the shape of a path, and that the path ran out to the east where no one had charted.
On the first still morning of spring, she pushed a tin dinghy off the shingle. The five families stood at the tideline with their arms folded. Birds lifted from the cliff in a loose black flock, wheeling once over the harbour, then breaking into separate threads, one for every boat that had ever turned back.
Ines did not come back for the herring. The orchard people say she reached a green island where the roots are the only walls, and that her name is still written on Maud's slate under a blank line, waiting for someone brave enough to fill it.
