Outline and solid triangle tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two small triangle tattoos sit on the inner forearms of two different people, shown side by side against white fabric. The triangle on the lighter arm is a thin single-line outline, while the one on the darker arm is a solid black filled triangle. Both are black ink on a simple, minimal composition with plenty of negative space.

The two barges came down the Ouse on the same wet morning, one riding high and empty, the other sunk to her gunwales with coal. Old Tam Pell had painted a triangle on each prow the spring before, so the lock-keepers could tell them apart at a glance. The empty boat wore an outline, three thin lines with the middle left open to the water. The loaded boat wore a solid black wedge, as heavy as her cargo.

Nell Harrow steered the empty one. Her brother Ash had the loaded one, and he never once lifted a hand to her from it, not at Naburn, not at the sluice below Bishopthorpe. At the lock, the keeper's wife, who had buried two husbands and read the weather in the cattle, told Nell that a boat with an open shape on its prow would always be asked what it was carrying. "Open to what comes," she said, "or open to what's been left behind." Nell did not understand her, and said so.

They tied up together below the mill that night, as they had since they were children. Ash came across the planks with a lantern and a tin of cold tea, and held the light first to her prow, then to his own. Neither of them spoke. The coal was sold in the morning, and the wedge on Ash's boat was found to be hollow inside, a false hold packed with wet grey stones from the riverbed.

Nell sold the empty boat to a man from Selby. Before she handed over the tiller, Ash climbed onto her deck and took the tin of tar from his coat. "Fill it in," he said. She dipped the brush, and the open triangle went black from edge to edge.
