Do Not Resuscitate lettering on a chest
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows a close view of the upper chest, with a striped shirt held open by two hands on either side. The tattoo is three lines of text in black ink, with the words DO NOT and RESUSCITATE set in a loose, hand-drawn lettering style with uneven strokes. The skin tone is neutral and the background is soft, keeping the focus on the text.

Dear Maureen, the nurse says I am allowed to write to you as long as I keep it short, so I will try. The kettle in the ward kitchen has a crack down its side that drips onto the hob, and I have started timing my tea by the drips. You would laugh at me for that. You always said I never once finished a cup while it was hot.

The doctor came round this morning with his clipboard and asked me the question again, the one about what I want done if my heart stops. I told him what I told him last spring. He nodded and wrote it down, and then he looked at the words on my chest, which he has seen a hundred times, and he said, very kindly, that the ink was the clearest thing in the room. I said that was exactly why I had it done. Nobody can mistake a tattoo for a mood.
Do you remember the parlour on Cable Street, the man with the mustard waistcoat who kept a budgie in the window? He wrote the letters freehand because I wouldn't let him use a stencil. Said it would look like a warning on a fridge. It took him forty minutes and I didn't flinch once, which he claimed was a record. Your hand is on my shoulder in that photograph you took, though you were nowhere near the chair.
I have the shirt you bought me folded on the chair by the window, the blue one with the stripes. Bring it when you come on Thursday, and bring the good biscuits, not the digestives. Tell the girl at the desk I said so. Your loving sister, Ivy.
