Dog head tattoo on a finger
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded black and grey portrait of a dog's head sits across the middle finger, with soft tonal modelling around the eyes, nose and ears. Partly visible on the index finger is a second animal design, and a bold dark symbol with solid, simple linework sits on the ring finger. The hand rests on a speckled granite surface, and the close framing keeps the tattoos sharp and centred.

The leeks were flattened by the time Walter Quayle got the allotment gate open, and Tansy stood in the middle of the bed with soil on her muzzle, looking at him as though he were the one who had broken the rules.

Nan had made the rules, not him. Tansy was not to dig, not to lie on the potting bench, and not to chase the blackbirds that came to the water butt at six. Since the funeral Walter had broken most of them himself, arriving each morning with a flask and a sandwich he didn't eat, and Tansy had kept him company at the gate, sitting with her ears folded down like the corners of an old letter.
On Thursday he found the biscuit tin under the shed shelf. Inside were seed packets, each marked in Nan's pencil with a row and a date, and a scrap of card that read: Tansy's row, runner beans, tall, let them climb the net, don't let him stake them wrong. He laughed for the first time in weeks, a rough sound that startled the blackbird off the rim of the butt.
He knelt in the trampled leeks and pressed the beans into the soft earth one by one. When he had finished, the dog lay down beside the row with her chin on her paws, watching the place where the first green shoot would come up.
