Sitting dog on a calf

Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A sitting dog in profile with a black outline and grey shading, drawn in a loose, sketchy style with angular contours. The tattoo fills the frame on a lower leg, with the dog's tail curling at the left and its front paws at the bottom. The skin tone and soft lighting are visible around the design, and the ink is almost entirely black and grey.

Our dog had no business sitting at the pit gate. Nobody could shift him. My da reckoned he was keeping count of the shifts.

He had a way of looking that wasn't at anybody. Head tipped to one side, one ear up and the other folded, as if he was listening for a whistle under the ground. When the cage bell went at half two he stood, and every time it was somebody else's name he sat down again. Mam said it was daft. I took him a heel of bread on the way home from school and didn't tell her.

The winter the roof came in at Number Four, he sat there nine days straight. Rain ran off his back and froze on the setts. The rescue men walked past him in their helmets, and one of them, a big soft-spoken man called Eli Fenwick, crouched down and told him to go home, lad, there's nothing more to see. Shep didn't look at him. He kept his eyes on the winch wheel.

On the tenth morning the bell rang twice and the men came up grey as ash, Da among them, limping but walking. Shep got up slowly, the way old dogs do, and went to meet him. I watched from the wall. Nobody had told him to stop waiting, so he hadn't.
