Dog outline tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A brown and white dog rests its muzzle against the inside of a person's forearm, which is held near the floor on pale wooden boards. The small tattoo on the forearm is a simple single-line outline of a dog's head in dark ink, with no shading. The plain background and soft natural light keep the focus on the tattoo and the animal.

The dog came aboard at Tilbury with a length of baling twine for a collar and no name the crew could agree on. Harold wanted Bosun, the mate wanted her off at the next port, and the dog settled it herself by walking up the gangway as if she had paid the harbour dues. We called her Moll in the end, after nobody in particular, and she answered to it with the same flat indifference she gave everything else.

Past Finisterre the swell got up and stayed up for nine days. I had the middle watch because the forecastle timbers groaned like a sick man and I couldn't sleep through them. Moll took to climbing the ladder at two bells and laying her chin across my forearm where it rested on the wheel spokes, heavy as a sack of coal, her breath steaming the glass. Nobody had taught her the hours. She just knew them, the way the sea knows its own tides.
On the ninth night the cook came up white-faced to say the flour had gone to weevils and the tea was a rumour. We laughed, the dog thumped her tail, and somewhere in the laughing I found a biro in my breast pocket and drew her head on my forearm while she dozed against it, the line wobbling with the roll. It came out crooked. I kept it anyway, the way you keep a letter that says less than you hoped.
We made Cork on a grey Tuesday. Harold shook my hand, the mate pretended not to notice, and Moll walked down the gangway without looking back, which is how I knew she had been a sailor all along. The outline has blurred at the edges now, and when the wind comes off the harbour I lift my arm to my face and smell salt, and wood, and the warm weight of a watch kept together.
