Fluffy dog outline tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black outline tattoo of a small, fluffy, seated dog sits on the inner forearm near the wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the fur is suggested by soft, wavy contours. A blurred, tan, long-haired dog fills the right side of the frame, and the photo has a warm, slightly filtered colour tone.

The dog has taken up residence on the front step again, sitting bolt upright the way he does when he means to be taken seriously. Mr Ambrose in the front room says he is a Shih Tzu with ideas above his station. I say he is a dog of sound character who has never once been moved off a doorstep by anything smaller than a bailiff.
He came to us in the spring with a lodger called Mr Tully, who paid a month in advance in coppers and then went out for cigarettes one morning and did not come back. We kept the room. We kept the dog. Mrs Pryce next door says that is the trouble with keeping things, they keep you back.
Yesterday the post boy brought a parcel addressed to Tully, a tin of boot polish inside, and a postcard of the pier with nothing written on it but a small ink drawing of a dog sitting with its head cocked to one side. I have no idea who sent it. The dog sniffed the card, then sat down beside it on the mat as if he had been waiting for it all along.
I have put the kettle on and left the front door open a crack, just in case. Dinner is fish. The dog has already had his share.
