Folk birds and flower wrist band

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A band of black ink runs around the wrist, showing two stylised birds with curled tails either side of a central flower made of dots and petals. The lines are solid and bold with flat fill, and the ink is a single dark tone with no colour. A hand gently holds a small white puppy's paw in the foreground, with bare feet and a wooden deck filling the background.

Dear Anders, the deck is finally sanded, though the splinters have had their revenge on my knees. I spent most of Tuesday on my hands and knees with Mamma's old paper stencils spread out beside me, the ones she cut for the dresser birds before you were born. You remember them: the two birds with tails curled up like the ends of a good loaf, and the flower between them made of dots and little petals. I traced the whole band onto card and cut it out with the kitchen scissors, which are not as sharp as they used to be.

The puppy from the Lindqvists' litter has decided the stencil is a toy. He had it out of my hand before I could stop him and chewed one of the flowers into a sort of lace. I was cross for about a minute and then I sat on the step and laughed until the dog gave up and lay down on my feet. Ulla says he is a rascal, which is the kindest thing anyone has said about him all week.

I have kept the bitten one, though. When I held it up to the light this evening the gap in the flower looked more like the real thing did, the way the paint wears off Mamma's dresser where people's hands used to rest. The birds are still whole. I think that is what she would have wanted kept.

Come at midsummer and bring your good scissors. We will cut a clean one together, and you can tell me whether the birds should face the same way or turn to look at each other. Give my love to Helen and the children. The dog sends his regards, mostly to my slippers.

Your sister, Kirsten
