Small airplane tattoo on a wrist holding a dog's paw
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with a small black airplane tattoo on the inside of the wrist holds a light tan dog's paw, and the dark body of a second dog is visible at the lower right. The airplane is a simple solid silhouette in black ink with crisp edges. The warm terracotta tiles and soft natural light keep the palette muted, so the tattoo is the only dark mark in the frame.

Brother Jerome had kept the gate at St Calder's for thirty winters, and in all that time the old sheepdog Mab had never missed the noon bird. It was a small grey shape scratching over the ridge, and the monks said that when it came Mab would climb the wall on her hind legs, set her forepaws on the stone, and watch it out of sight.

Nobody in the valley knew why. The herdsman's boy, Tam, came up one Sunday with a bad knee and sat on the step beside her. He told Jerome the bird passed over the south farm where his uncle had gone twenty years back to find work, and that a dog who loses her master will watch the sky for the road he took. Jerome said nothing. He had heard a great many stories about dogs and trusted few of them.
That week he wrote a letter for Tam to send, in careful capitals, saying the dog was well and the gate was kept. Tam folded it into a paper bird the way the carpenter's son had taught him, all sharp corners and no mercy in the creases, and threw it from the wall. A gust took it over the terracotta roofs of the village and out across the valley, and Mab rose on her back legs to follow it until it was a speck.
The reply came before the frosts. It was one line in a shaking hand: tell the dog I see her too. Tam read it aloud at the gate. Mab came down off the wall, lay on the warm step, and did not look at the sky at noon again.
