Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded black and grey portrait of a dog's head and shoulders sits inside an oval border made of twisted rope. The dog is shown in three-quarter view with soft grey shading on its ears, face and the bandana around its neck. The forearm is photographed outdoors against a blurred shoreline, with a real dog in the foreground looking away from the camera.

The dog is back on the quay again, Tom, sat square on the bollard with that blue neckerchief knotted tight under his jaw the way Father used to knot his. Mrs Pryce says he has been there since the Tuesday, nosing at every hull that comes round the breakwater and turning away when it is not the right one.

You will remember the Marigold had a dog aboard, a brindled bitch with ears like a pair of folded sails. She went out with Danny Lowe on the Thursday and came back with nobody. Danny's boat was found upturned on the Skerry shingle, but the dog never came ashore that anybody saw, so the men have decided she is out there yet, swimming the long way round looking for him.

Ellis at the chandlery cut a length of the Marigold's old mooring warp and sold it to Mrs Pryce for a shilling, and she has worked it into a ring to hang over the mantel. I cannot look at it long. Every time the wind backs round to the south-west I hear the bell at the lifeboat house and I think it is her barking for me to come down and fetch her. Father always said a dog knows the sea better than a man and that she would wait for the tide to give her back.

So I have been down the quay with a tin of biscuits each evening, sitting beside him, and I have started to think he is not waiting for Danny at all. He is listening for the bell. Write when you make harbour, and bring your sea boots, because the tide is turning and the gulls are up off the Skerry again.
