A hand is raised near a real tabby cat, and a small tattoo of a tabby cat's head and shoulders sits on the inner wrist. The cat is shaded in greys and browns, with a wreath of red, pink and blue flowers beneath it. The soft, natural lighting and plain background keep the focus on the tattoo.

The cat had been sleeping in the gatehouse arch since before the roof fell in, and nobody at Hallowmere had ever found a reason to move her. Her name was Tansy, after the bitter yellow weed that grew between the flagstones, and she took her duty to the ruin seriously. Each morning she sat on the broken parapet above the moat and looked down the valley road as though a carriage might come up it at any moment carrying someone who owed her money.

I kept the gardens then, the last of the Ashcombe line's hired hands, and I had orders to clear the courtyard before the summer visitors arrived. Tansy watched me do it with the flat disapproval of a magistrate. When I pulled up the briars that had climbed the chapel wall, she came down, sat on my boot, and would not move until I had woven the cut canes into a ring and set it on the step of the old well. I thought it was a joke I had played on myself. The next week the ring had roses wound through it, red and pink and a blue flower I could not name, and no one in the village would own to it.

The wreath is still on the well step. The cat sits beside it now, grey at the muzzle, her tail curled over her paws, waiting for the carriage that will never come. I have stopped asking her why she wants it kept. Some mornings I bring a fresh bloom and set it in the ring myself, and she watches me with those patient, narrowed eyes as if I have finally understood the job.
