Out of the snow trotted a long brown dachshund with a red collar, nose low, body as long as a loaf and legs about as useful as spoons. Nobody owned him, or everybody did. He had no papers, so Teo would not let him through, and he would not be sent back either. He simply went round. Up the north slope, across the line of white stones, down the south slope, and back up again, round the bend, until the snow had pressed his feet into the road in a ribbon that never quite ended.
By morning Teo had come out with a flask and a rubber stamp, because the tracks had crossed the frontier twelve times and not one officer on either side would swear it was trespass. He stood at the gate and watched the little dog come down the hill for the last time. Then he stamped the ledger with four small marks, the big pads first and the small one trailing behind, and wrote beside them: entered, no fault found.
So when you cross tomorrow and the guard asks what you're carrying, tell him the truth. Look there, at the bend in the snow. Four prints, going nowhere in particular, and still going.
