The dog came up the scree road the week after the steward died, muddy to the shoulder and carrying nothing. Mrs Abernethy at the gatehouse gave him bread because she had no other use for it. He ate it on the drawbridge stones, then walked round the ruined keep three times with his nose low, as if counting something that had gone missing.

The village said the castle was owed a debt. Four hundred years back, Lord Teague had promised the hill a hound for every heir, and the hill had kept its side with one patient grey bitch who lay in the hall ashes. People said she still came back to the ring of stones where the tower fell. Nobody believed it. Nobody went up there after dark either.
The steward's grandson, Iain, was nine and afraid of the dark, so he took the stranger's rope lead and went up to the keep anyway. Under a fallen lintel they found a hollow full of dry leaves, and in the leaves a child's shoe, and beside it a print pressed into the mud, the pad broad and the toes spread wide. The dog sat down by the shoe and would not move until Iain sat down too.
They dug until the rain came. Under the flagstones they found a small bundle wrapped in a tartan shawl, and nothing in it was frightening any more. The dog laid his head on his paws and did not howl. Iain said afterwards that it was the quietest thing he had ever seen, and that the hound walked him back down to the gatehouse with the lantern held in his teeth, and never once looked behind.
