Dollar bill rose on an arm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows several dollar bills folded and twisted around a central spiral, forming a rose-like shape. The linework is fine and heavy in places, with detailed shading that gives the bills depth, curl and texture. It is rendered entirely in black and grey ink and sits centred on the arm against a plain, blurred background.

Sit nearer, where the lamp catches you, because I am too old to shout over the generator. Every October the Gallagher Brothers' fair came up the old A road and set itself down in the Mill Field, and every October Ezra Pell stood at the foot of the big wheel selling roses. Not flowers. Roses folded from dollar notes, a fortune of greenbacks rolled and twisted round a spiral heart, sold for a shilling to lads who wanted to look as if they had somewhere to be.

Nobody knew where the notes came from. Ezra said his cousin in Ohio posted them in letters, a bill at a time, and that a proper rose needed nine to hold its curl. Mary Quaile from the coconut shy bought the first one for her husband, who had been out of work since the foundry shut. She slid it into his coat on the Sunday night. He found it on the Monday, held it up to the window for a long while, and said nothing at all, which in that house passed for a speech.
The trouble came the autumn the big wheel stuck at the top with the Quailes' boy in a cradle. Ezra climbed the struts with a rose clamped in his teeth and wound the last note round the bolt until the engineer could come up the ladder. Paper, he told me afterwards, is only paper until someone needs it to bear weight.
Ezra's gone now, and the fair stopped coming in '74. Walk the Mill Field on a still night and the grass still lies in a flat spiral where the wheel stood, and the frost sits there longer than anywhere else. Pocket your money, son. But if anyone ever hands you a rose, check the curl holds before you thank them.
