Infinity symbol with love and life script
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin, dark ink infinity symbol loops across the upper arm, with the script words love and life written inside each side of the loop. The linework is clean and even, with no visible shading, and the tattoo is set against pale skin. A hand wearing two rings holds the arm in the lower part of the frame, and a white top fills the background.

You have the telegraph key under your thumb when the wire goes dead, and Mrs Pargeter from the post office comes running up Chapel Street with her apron still on, saying the line to Harrowgate is down again and you are to ring the depot by hand. You do not ring the depot. You sit with your cardigan buttoned wrong and listen to the hum where the wire used to be.

Your brother Dennis went out to Korea in March. His last letter came in a brown envelope with the corner torn off, and in the margin he had drawn a sign copied from a bracelet in the Woolworths window: two loops pinched together like a figure eight lying on its side. Inside one loop he had written love, and inside the other, after a word he had crossed out, life. You keep the letter in the biscuit tin with the ration books, where your mother can't find it.
On Thursday the line comes back at half past four. There is a telegram for the Ashdown farm, short as a breath: ARRIVING STATION TUESDAY STOP NOT DEAD STOP. You read it twice, then fold it into your pocket, because the clerk would read it aloud at the counter and the whole street would know by teatime. You cycle up the hill yourself and push it under the kitchen door, where Maureen has been waiting since spring with her shoes by the mat.
On Tuesday you stand with the porters while the train comes in grey and steaming. The first thing you see is a hand lifted at a carriage window, and then a finger drawing a figure eight in the wet glass, the loops joined at the middle, love on one side and life on the other.
