Dear Nell, the chain you sent me was the wrong length again, so I've slipped the spare links onto my own wrist and they hang past the cuff like a bead curtain. Father says the Tamsey barge will come through the lock on Thursday if the river holds, and it has held for three weeks now, which is itself a kind of miracle in March. He has been sitting by the gates every evening with his pipe, watching the water go down an inch at a time.

The moon charm you bought at the Saturday market is worn thin on one horn already, from my thumb. The diamond at the end is only glass, the man swore on his mother, but it catches the lamp so well that the lockman's boy asked if I'd stolen it off a duchess.
If the barge comes Thursday, bring the red thread from your mother's workbox. I want a line of it drawn right across the top of my wrist, under the black one, so that when Father looks at me he sees the river and the thing we decided to keep. Tell me you'll come. The gates will be open by noon and I'll be standing on the coping with my hand up, like a fool, so the whole boat can see.
