Steaming mug line drawing on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous black outline shows a hand raising a mug with three wisps of steam above it, with the line trailing down into a contour that curves along the leg. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is entirely black ink on pale skin. The composition sits vertically on the outer thigh, with a dark shorts hem visible at the top of the frame.

The kettle was already singing on the range when Mari heard the first gull over Gannet Head, and she knew the Lark would be short of the bank by now, cutting north through the grey. Tobias had been eleven days out for hake. She poured the tea into the chipped blue mug with the handle that never sat straight, wrapped her shawl twice, and climbed the path to the harbour wall with the cup in one hand.

The old men at the slipway said it was foolishness. Steam could not be seen past the second headland, they said, and the fog had been sitting on the water since Tuesday like a wet sheet on a line. But her mother had done the same for her father, and her grandmother before that, and so each morning Mari lifted the mug high above her head and held it there, letting the heat rise into the air where any boat might see it.
On the twelfth morning the mist was so thick she could not see her own boots. She lifted the mug anyway, and her arm began to shake. Then came a cough from the engine, a long way off, and then a second cough closer, and a single white lamp swung out of the murk past the rocks. A hand lifted from the wheel. It was not waving. It was only held up, the way a man holds up a cup to show he has it.
Tobias tied up with his hair plastered flat and drank the tea cold, because by then it had gone cold in her hands. "You kept it hot," he said. "Only as long as I could hold it up," she told him, and walked home down the path with the empty mug swinging from her fingers, the steam long gone from it.
