You are on the ridge above the salt road when the mist lifts and you see the thread. It hangs from the far hill in a loose dotted line, knotted every hand's width, pale flax catching the grey light. Someone on the other side has shot an arrow across the valley and it has dropped short into the reeds below your post, its shaft still trailing the line like a child's kite string.

Your uncle wants it cut and burned. Every watch in the valley was told the same thing after the bridge went up: no crossings, no messages, no reply. You untie the arrow anyway. The feathers are goose grey, and someone has cut fine hatched grooves into the fletching with a bone knife, the way your sister used to mark her weaving. Under the binding of the shaft there is a second knot, tight and new, and beneath it a single word scratched with a nail: wait.

You tie your own arrow to the end of the thread, a red-feathered shaft you were saving for a hunt you will never go on, and you draw it towards the far hill. The wind is against you. The first shot drops into the water. The second clears the reeds, climbs, and falls into the bracken on the far slope, its line running taut and then slack.

By dusk the thread has gone tight in both directions, pulled from either end. When you lean against the stone and feel it hum under your palm, you know someone on the far hill is pulling back.
