Triangles on forearms and love on fingers
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The left panel shows two small triangle tattoos on separate forearms, one an open black outline and the other a solid black fill, set against white fabric. The right panel shows two fine line tattoos on fingers, each an infinity loop with the word love written in flowing script, in thin black linework. The composition is a close, soft-focus diptych with neutral backgrounds.

Mind the wasps, they're drunk on the windfalls, so keep your hands low while I tell it. Two sisters, Nell and Ada Corran, shared one orchard at Lower Staunton and one grafting knife their father left them, its blade worn down to a sliver. Every apple crate he ever packed bore a mark burned into the end: a triangle, point up. Nell's was an open outline she cut with the knife tip. Ada's was solid, filled in with soot and lard until it shone.

They quarrelled the way orchards quarrel, quietly, over which row the frost would take first. In the bad spring Nell went off to the coast with a carter's boy and did not write. Ada kept the trees. Each March she grafted scion wood onto stock and bound every join with waxed twine, looping it in a figure eight laid on its side, the way their father had shown them so the wax would hold. She pencilled the word love along the inside of the twine, where the rain could not reach it, because it was the only word their mother ever used when she meant forgive me.
Nell came back the autumn the Bramleys came in heavy. She stood at the gate with a crate under one arm, and on its end was a fresh triangle, open, cut beside an older one that was solid. Ada knew the second mark. She had done it herself the year Nell left, and she had never told anyone why.
They set the crate down in the long grass, and the two triangles sat side by side, the same height, the same slope, as if one ruler had drawn them both. The wasps came down on the windfalls like they had been waiting all year to be asked.
