Henna floral design on hand and foot
Hand · Colour · Photo
A bare hand and foot are decorated with intricate brown henna in a mehndi style, using flower medallions, scrolling paisley forms and fine dotted detail. The hand design runs from the wrist across the back of the hand and fingers, while the foot pattern wraps the top and toes, with a band of motifs along the lower leg. The warm skin tones and dark wooden surface behind the hands create a soft, low-key composition.

The cone of paste never sat still in Nasreen's fingers until the first curl was down, so she worked the stem of the flower with her breath held, the way her aunt had taught her in a back room in Small Heath. Hanif, the groom's cousin, had dragged over a stool and a flask of sweet tea and wanted to talk about the coach firm that had let them down. She let him talk. Her eyes stayed on the wrist.

Her aunt's notebook lay open on the lacquered box beside the tray, its pages soft from thumbs. Every pattern in it had a name in Urdu at the top and a small pencilled number at the bottom, the count of dots. Auntie had never let anyone take a design out of the book without copying it by hand first, and Nasreen had copied eleven hundred of them. This one she had not copied. She had simply remembered it, because it was the one Auntie had drawn on her own palm the week before she died: a medallion of six petals with a ring of dots that never quite closed.
When the paste was dry she scraped it off with the edge of a butter knife, and the stain rose up brown and sure, darker than she had expected. Hanif leaned in and asked whether it would last through the nikah. "Two weeks if you're lucky," she said. "It fades on its own schedule." He nodded as though that was an answer he could carry home. When she wiped the stool down afterwards she found, pressed into the grain of the wood, one small dot of brown she had missed, and she left it there.
