A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Your father taught you the sea by the sound it made over the pit. Under Saltcoates the seams ran out beneath the North Sea, and on still nights you could hear the water working through the rock like a crowd in the next room. He called it the drum. You sat on the back step with your knees up while the lamp-room light swung on the headgear, counting the cages that came up empty before the one that carried him.

The summer the strike ended, the men came up grey and quiet, and nobody said much about what the sea had done. You went down to the harbour wall with a twist of barley sugar from the corner shop and a pencil stub, and you drew on the wet concrete the shape you had seen through the window of the bath house: a single curl that rose, broke and rose again. Your father found you there at dusk. He crouched beside the drawing and tapped the crest with a finger blackened to the second knuckle.

"That's the one that gets you," he said. "Looks harmless from the top."

You thought he meant the water. Years later, when the pit was flooded and the village sold off in lots, you understood he had meant the drawing too, and the way you had got the curl right on the first try, with no rubbing out.
