The pounce wheel had a notch missing from its teeth, so every line Mrs Abernethy cut for us came out with a skip in it, a small gap where the chalk dust could creep through. Father swore he would have it filed. He never did. By the time I was old enough to hold the wheel myself, I knew a pattern by its ticking, tick, tick, tick, and the hitch that meant the seam was about to bend.

The Caldwell bodice was the last thing we cut together. Her measurements went onto brown paper in pencil, and then we walked the wheel along each mark so the chalk would fall through the pricks and leave a dotted road on the cloth. Where a seam had to turn or a button sat, Father pressed a star, eight points drawn with the tip of the compass. Nobody would mistake it for a stray prick. A star means stop and look, he said. Everything else is only the road.
In November Mrs Caldwell came back and asked whether the bodice could be let out an inch. Father said paper does not stretch, and that was the end of it. That night, with him asleep in the back room, I unrolled a fresh sheet and ran the wheel past the last star and out into the blank margin, where nothing had been measured at all. I pricked it until the line ran off the edge of the table. The coat was sold on the Monday, and nobody asked me where the road went.
