Twig and star constellation fine line tattoos
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The left photo shows a small, delicate twig or branch drawn in thin black linework just below the collarbone, with a tiny mark visible on a finger. The right photo shows a dotted constellation of stars running diagonally across the upper back near the shoulder blade, with a few larger star points. Both tattoos are rendered in fine, grey-black ink against plain, softly lit skin and light backgrounds.

The fog came down over Ashby Wood the same afternoon the lamp oil ran out, and Old Marta sent her grandson to the far edge of the trees for the last of the kindling. Pell was nine and did not like the wood. Everyone in Lower Hasling knew the paths shifted when the mist lay thick, and that the stones at the crossroads had been set there by people nobody spoke of anymore.

He cut a hazel twig with his knife, a thin forked piece no longer than his hand, and snapped one prong off so the stub pointed the way he had come. Marta had taught him that. A thing marked by hand is a thing the wood must answer to. He walked with his eyes on the ground and the bundle on his back, and when the path split three ways he stopped, because the trees had gone quiet in the way that meant something was listening.
Then the sky opened in a single gap above the canopy, and he saw the old stars Marta called the Ewe and Her Lamb, a line of dots strung slant across the dark. He lined the twig up with them, the way she had shown him at the window, and the pattern held. Every few steps a bright one winked, a point to aim at. He followed them out of the trees and onto the cart road, where the lantern shone on the mill wheel.
At the door he laid the twig across the lintel above the kindling, still pointing. Marta looked at it for a long time. Keep the stars and the twig together, she said, and you will always find your way out of Ashby, fog or no fog. Pell nodded and did not tell her the stars had been the easy part. It was the snapping of the twig that had kept his hands from shaking.
