Script love tattoo behind the ear

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of the word love written in a flowing cursive script in black ink on skin behind an ear. The linework is thin and even, with a looping tail on the L and a continuous stroke connecting the letters. The ink is solid black with no colour, and the tattoo sits in the centre of the frame with a finger partly visible at the lower right.

Her father had taught her to write on this same towpath, sitting on the lock beam at Cowley with a biro held the wrong way round. He had shown her how to loop the capital L so its tail swept back under the word like a mooring line taking the strain, and how never to lift the pen if you could help it. Tom had gone north to Leeds in March with a rucksack and a promise to write. The promise had lasted until June.

"Dear Tom," she wrote, and the L came out as it always did, one long stroke rolling into the o, the v, the e. She stopped there, looking at the word she had not meant to write. It had come out as though she had been waiting to say it all along.

She kept going without lifting the nib. The news about the boat, the price of diesel, the heron that had stolen the cat's dinner, all of it ran on in the same unbroken line until the page was full. At the bottom she signed her name with the last of the ink, and the stroke ran off the edge onto the table. The next morning, at Cowley, she posted it in the box by the lock keeper's cottage and watched the gates swing shut on the Wren's wake.
